Shed Safety in the Winter

Sheds provide a great space for storage, a workshop or just place to escape, but unfortunately they can also be an easy target for thieves. Now that the colder months are upon us, and the clocks have rolled back, the dark evenings make sheds more accessible for thieves and opportunists.

At Wood Lane Timber, we understand just how important a shed can be! Some people, be them tradesmen or not, store a number of values things in their sheds, so it’s important they are properly secured! We’ve put together these few tips to help you make sure your property is secure!

Access to your Garden

If your garden is tricky to access, it can go a long way in keeping out any potential thieves. We recommend you ensure your fencing is secure and strong, and consider planting hedges as an extra barrier!

Doors & Locks

Use a good quality hasp and padlock to secure your shed door – while being careful to ensure that any screws are covered so that they can’t be removed from the outside. The same applies to your hinges, which are worth investing in to make sure your shed door acts as the obstruction it was designed to be.

Location

By having your shed somewhere that is blatantly visible in your garden, it will allow you to keep an eye on it from the house and can act as that all-important deterrent! Having it hidden away at the back of your garden is not a good idea!

Lights

Another great idea is to have a motion-activated light in your garden. Not only will this act as a deterrent, but it will also alert you of any movement in your garden so that you can be vigilant.

Alarm

You can achieve total peace of mind about your shed security by installing an alarm. It is sometimes possible to include the shed in an existing home alarm system, but standalone units are also available for this specific purpose.
