Why Sustainable Timber is so Important to us!

Once upon a time, someone could simply go out and buy wood without thinking too much about where it came from and how it was harvest. These days however, preserving the world’s trees, woodlands and forests is an absolute imperative - essential for our future safety!

The world is currently fighting against previous generations neglect and disregard for the environment. This is one of the many reasons that so many builders and contractors are turning towards timber as the material of choice. The naturally sourced material has numerous benefits for the construction industry as well as the environment – but it is so important that is it sourced sustainably!

Whether you are a professional or personal user, we believe that you can only truly enjoy the beauty of wood if you know comes from a sustainable source.

But what exactly is sustainable timber? For wood to be classed as sustainable, it firstly must be harvested correctly. Correct harvesting of trees involves planting a tree to replace one which has been cut down. In addition to this, for your logs to be considered naturally sourced it’s vital that there hasn’t been any damage to the neighbouring environment in which the trees were taken from.

Sustainable wood comes from sustainably managed forests – it is renewable because the forest stewards manage the landscape to prevent damage to eco-systems, watersheds, wildlife and the trees themselves. This takes a long term, rather than short term view, of the resource.

Here at Wood Lane Timber, we are passionate about maintaining wood that has been sourced sustainably and are FSC or PeFC certified.

Founded in 1993, the Forest Stewardship Council was established to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. In 1999, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification followed the FSC council to promote forest sustainable management through certification. Achieving certification from these councils was vital for our company to deliver to customers a great range of sustainable products.

We are committed to our responsibility for the environment and ensure that we source suppliers who have certification for their forests. This makes sure that we sell only the finest and that it comes from legal, well managed forests!

Our passion for sustainability runs right through the core of the company starting with the Managing Director, who is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of our policy, which is reviewed on an annual basis. We also ensure that employees responsible for the purchase are educated and trained in sourcing sustainable produce in accordance with our policy.
